• Use Salem Maritime for the waterfront and the national-park sites.
• Use PEM when weather, group energy, or indoor time matters.
• Do not reduce Salem to October unless the trip is actually about October events.

Keep Salem useful in more than one season.

Cape Cod needs season and car logic

Cape Cod becomes worthwhile when beach, trail, seashore, town, and season are the point of the extension, not when the map simply suggests it is nearby.

• Use the Salt Pond Visitor Center as the first Outer Cape checkpoint for current park information.
• Check Route 6, visitor-center hours, park conditions, weather, and beach-season pressure before committing.

Only add the Cape when the trip has enough time and the coast is the reason.

Choose the trip length before the room

Salem is the clearest candidate here for a focused rail day from Boston. A Cape visit needs one chosen town and a realistic return; the Berkshires deserve an overnight when the museums are the reason for going.

• Salem day: choose the outward and return train, one museum or waterfront block, and a meal near the return route. In busy periods, reserve what must be booked before committing to the day.
• Berkshires overnight: arrive at the chosen town, spend one main block at MASS MoCA or the Clark, and check the other museum’s opening before adding a second day. North Adams and Williamstown still require a transfer.
• Cape overnight: choose Mid Cape or Lower Cape around the beach or town you will use repeatedly. Do not stay in a cheaper town that turns each day into another long drive.

Keep the journey practical from arrival through the final return; operator rules remain date-specific.
